All is Quiet on New Year’s Day

Yo, I know it’s been a long time since we rapped at ya, but the Bev Rec machine has been in high gear and we’ve hardly had time to vacuum the Spirit Whisper room, let alone blog. The Winter/Spring brochure has been mailed and is being viewed daily on our website; The Carriage House website is almost finished; Trixie is still learning to do her business outside and Bruce is slowly recovering from being smashed into by a Buick.

We’ll recap December/January for you with this short, bulleted list…

• Holiday party was complete with gifts, French toast and Alex.

• Beverly’s New Year was a success with Hannah Theriault and Kate Norton volunteering to help with costumes at the GAR Hall.

• Bruce was hit by a car on New Year’s Eve and spent more time than anyone ever has lying in the middle of Dane Street. HE’S OKAY!

• Scott Blanchette worked at Bev Rec over the break, freezing his butt off in the Carriage House.

• Holiday staff reunion was in January at Café Salerno with 20 people in attendance. We ate spaghetti, heard the story of Bruce’s accident and enjoyed soft rock on the radio. Josh, Skev, the McAuliffes, the Stokes, the Lanes, Matt Mc., Margaret H., Kayla D., Dan C. and Ryan L. were among those in attendance. Unfortunately, everyone’s resolution was not to gossip, so no juicy stories except that Pauly D. DJ’d at Sam’s school and she got up close! He looked fresh to death.

• Bruce and I have had many, many meetings this month. Blah.

• I got glasses.

• Trixie barks at everyone and is still being office-broken. She loves long walks on Lynch Beach.

• It is Stella’s 5th birthday next week and we’re going to celebrate!

The Skev Report – Sadly, there has been little seen of Skev McDonald. He was coming in on a regular basis, but always missed everyone but Gail. He was on the reunion planning committee, so I did manage to see him once and speak to him on the cellie. He likes school and the Brain Store. He planned to go to Foxwoods, but I don't think he did. He's friendly with my BFF, Molly, and he and Josh say we are personality twins. I knew there was a reason why I liked her…

It’s the Holiday Season, So Whoop-Dee Doo!

Yo, I know it’s been a long time since we rapped at ya, but we’ve been REALLY busy! Lots going on in the Carriage House, the office, at Paddles Park, the Doig residence, the Carmody residence, and Skev’s room. So much to report and so little time to fit it in, between meetings, holiday shopping and turkey shoo-ing.

First thing’s first…
The Skev Report – Skev Kringle came in last week, or maybe two weeks ago and shared his Black Friday domination. He bought a huge Google TV, with all the trimmings (Blu-Ray player, extended warranty, etc.) for the low, low price of $550.00! Amazing! He also got to work with the CEO of Marbles over the crazy post-Thanksgiving shopping rush and she said he is doing a fantastic job. Sweet!

Bruce and Josh have been slaving away in the Carriage House, turning the old equipment room into the Cove Room, for meetings and a possible bride’s changing room. They found an old bottle in the wall, so when they were rebuilding the wall, we put a time capsule (of sorts) back into it. Years from now someone will uncover an old Diet Coke can, Bev Rec brochures and... well we'll let that remain a mystery…

BIG NEWS!! Bruce got a dog!! Say WOOF to Trixie, the newest member of the Bev Rec family! She’s too cute and she’s settling in to office life nicely (although she has been barking at me all day). Stella loves having someone smaller than her to take care of (boss around). Trixie has even been to Paddles Park. Stop by sometime and see her, she’s usually sitting in Bruce's big, comfy chair.

Gail is getting her kitchen painted blue and white and it looks marvelous.

The wild turkey family that usually haunts Bruce and my neighborhood has been trotting around Lynch Park lately. Josh had to shoo them away from the office so we could all enter the building safely. No one has suffered a turkey pecking, yet!

Bev Rec Staff Holiday Gathering is in the works. More info to come.

The next brochure is in the works right now and we have some excellent NEW classes for you! Also included will be summer camp and Wicked Cool for Kids science education dates and registration information! Don’t forget our Playgroup, that starts next year, so watch out for it! Our good deed for Thanksgiving is right here...

We donated this Thanksgiving meal to a large Beverly family with relatives serving in the U.S. Military overseas. This holiday season, we are thankful for their service to our country and the huge sacrifices their whole families make.

It's Tuesday and Josh is on his way to the gym before settling in at the Senior Center for evening enrichment. On the schedule tonight - Instant Piano, Intro to Knitting and Jin Shin Jyutsu.

Voting day has come and gone, but we just finished the bake sale items. Bruce got a very nutty banana bread, Gail picked up a gingerbread, I bought a butternut squash bread and Jean brought in some sugar cookies from the Danvers polls.

According to the old poll, you think Will Ferrell is the funniest, with Daniel Tosh and Tina Fey as close seconds. Billy Crystal and Whoopi Goldberg each got one vote and Richard Pryor and Adam Sandler didn't get any. Isn't anyone out there a fan of Opera Man?

NEW poll - what kind of coffee do you prefer? Bruce bought us a Keurig last x-mas and we love it. We drink a lot of Columbian, Donut Shop and Black Tiger. There's always a line at our Keurig in the morning.

Stella couldn't shake the spirit of Halloween and resurrected one of her old costumes...

Kudos to Josh and Jean for locating the clog in the vacuum... it was gross, but they perservered and now it is working like a charm again. We documented the process...

We found a sewing machine in Bruce's closet! We're going to set up a sewing station in the Spirit Whisper room and get crafty.

It's November, and there are officially 52 shopping days left until Christmas... holy moly!

So, the big news of the week is that Josh started as the site coordinator for evening enrichment at the Senior Center (he even dressed up a bit) and that we finally got rid of our old printer! We donated it to Savers and they are going to sell it to benefit the epilepsy foundation. Cool! It was kind of process getting it out of the building (sorry for the sideways videos-I cannot fix it!!)...

Chinese Food Fest

Happy Friday, everyone!

The heat is back on at the BRD and we're thankful, but keeping the space heaters close by... it looks beautiful outside, but it's chilly. This could be the last Indian Summer weekend, so soak it up! Visit Lynch, Obear or Dane Street and get your last tan of the year.

Today Josh and Gail are having a Chinese Food Fest. I don't like Chinese, so I'm having ramen, which really makes no sense. Gail fixed a biscuit breakfast and yesterday was yet ANOTHER group pizza lunch. Josh says he has a good bake-off idea, but has yet to reveal it.

Volunteers for the Holcroft Park Autumn Festival are trickling in (Skeslie!) and it's our goal to have at least 10 people, so sign up NOW! All you have to do is email Joscelyn or FB Beverly Recreation. Pumpkin decorating, face painting, basketball and games. Yeah, you can do that! Come on, staff!

In other news, the CH (that's Carriage House, for the layperson) doors are looking great, there are new lights to illuminate the outside all night long and some generous folks donated chandeliers and light fixtures to dress up the inside. Lovely.

Holy rain, Batman! Beverly is flooded! Fire up those sump-pumps! Okay, enough with the exclamations, but it is true, a great flood descended upon the North Shore and delayed operations quite a bit. Schools were delayed or closed and parts of Lynch Park were renamed Lake Beverly, having transformed into humongous Canadian goose baths. It took Gail hours to get to Lynch Park from Ryal Side and even longer for Jean to come from Danvers. Check out these pics…

As promised, here are the BIG updates…

There was a dead seal on the beach yesterday. The specialist at the N.E. Aquarium said to leave it alone, let it go back in with the tide. We did, but it was kind of gross just rotting away out there.

I know you’re probably sick of looking at pics of our bathroom, but if you’ve ever worked here or used the upstairs bathroom, you will marvel at the organization and cleanliness. Just a few more…

The Skev Report – Skevajandro graced us with his presence after his para-professional job. He wanted to pick up a recommendation, along with socializing and being the first to try the new K-cups. We chatted about his job (he’s bouncing from classroom to classroom and helping some kid with chemistry), about his weekend (Octoberfest in Boston was surprisingly low-key) and which celebrities in the most recent edition of People magazine look the meanest. I think Halle Berry looks mean, while Skev thinks Jennifer Aniston does. Josh thinks Tyra Banks is mean and hey, where did her talk show go? Skev admitted to taking over the remote at other people’s houses and always turning to VH1. He and I did a little techno beat boxing. He asked Josh to run errands with him that night and then went home for a nap.

Josh did not go to Octoberfest because, unfortunately, he has to pay the bills.

Momball got one series of games in on Friday, but the rest had to be postponed until the weekend of October 21. Not sure which days, exactly, but we’ll post when it has been decided.

Bruce and Josh went to Costco and bought coffee, pizza and the most important thing of all…

The barn door is almost done! We'll see an actual DOOR next week, but in the meantime, take a look at the construction and new lights. We're a few steps closer to a beautiful community center that everyone can enjoy. I can smell the arts and crafts supplies now...

Happy Birthday to Jean! We celebrated as soon as the apple crisp came out of the oven. Presents, munchkins, dessert, even a surprise visit from Suzanne, the Rose Garden Coordinator. Livin it up!

9:33 – The sun makes its first appearance of the day!
9:39 – Radio to Ryan, he responds by telling me he is currently going to the bathroom.
9:50 – Man is walking his child on a leash. Ryan is tired of people walking their children on leashes.
9:57 – 1st sticker of the day.
10:01 – 10:00 passes without lifeguards asking for help. Never thought that day would come.
10:08 – XC team leaves the park.
10:33 – Woman doing Tai-Chi on the hill.
10:38 – Ed enters the park, but not for kayaks, turns around and leaves for the access road.

The Return of Crock Pot Friday!

It's Crock Pot Friday or "Fancy" Friday (as it was dubbed when Skev showed up like this...)

We feasted on Italian wedding soup, biscuits, crackers, chocolate cake and M&M cookies. The chocolate was reported to have made Bruce tingle.

Everyone pitched in a little something and made this meal special. Even Skev graced us with his presence...

The Skev Report - Skev Armstrong was all dressed up for his job interview today. He will be subbing in a number of communities, in addition to working at Marbles, in the North Shore Mall. What a braniac! His advertisement in the Bev Rec brochure should really boost his tutoring business. Call 1-800-Skev! Mike is always a good sport, posing for as many pics as it takes. We love this one of him, recreating this classic childhood pose (see the invite on the wall behind him?)...

FINALLY! Here it is, bloggers!

Rec Rag 4th Edition - Summer 2011

Can you believe it is the last day of our summer 2011 program? Time flies when you are having fun. Since this is the last edition of the Rec Rag, we are trying to recap as much dirt, important info, etc. related to our staff as possible.

Margaret Hall has turned into a kickboxing fanatic and took Jocelyn C. to a class. Jocelyn won’t go back anytime soon. Ali A., Andrew P., and Katie H. went on a lunch date after park, but Ali and Katie may have forgotten to mention to Andrew that they were going to DQ after to get free ice cream from Corey M. Marc B. had a fun time pretending to be a king with Brendan L. at Monica C.’s house. Kenny P. skipped the last trivia day for some alone time with the GF. Justin G. could not stop putting the moves on the hostess at Applebees and was spotted walking her to her car. Kayla D. us now familiar with the roads of Lawrence after so many trips in two weeks. Congrats on getting your permit. Meg B. and Corey M. had a great ½ day at Crane’s Beach and had a fabulous drive in the “death cage” or “jail bus”. Anna J. showed that Bruce’s Panther Athletic Zone worked out well because she survived her first summer with the Rec. Dept. Alex M. and Jake S. ran a great 5K during Homecoming week, but Jake Stokes pulled out the win in the end for the Rec. Dept. team. Matt M. also ran a good race considering he hasn’t worked out since April. What’s Brewin’ has become the most popular site of the Rec Dept. Janessa B., Monica C., Robbie D., and Kristina L. are spotted there almost daily by Jocelyn C. (who has a drink named for her). Ryan M. stopped to pick up Ryan L. and drive him to rangering after Cranes. What a nice guy! Tim A. thinks there are 6 states in New England. Looks like he could receive some tutoring from Corey M. Rachel F. and Collette F. were seen duking it out trying to see who could have friends over. So sad for Aaron S. and Kate S. who were already there and had to change plans. Jocelyn R. has a nice house-warming gathering. Everyone loved her dog Seguin and his sharp teeth. Bill B. and Matt M. are gonna miss driving with each other during the year. Luckily Bill was there to assist Monica C. with an angry parent whose child wasn’t going to Cranes. Matt M., hope you have a cool, awesome, without a doubt, for sure year to come.

Marco had fun turning the LUV into a beach party. He also escorted his grandmother, who was working some great bedazzled crocs. Regan and Meghan N. loved the nice ride. Stef h. and Meghan had a great time planning their director day. Everything went so smoothly, and they beat the lifeguards to the beach. Bethany M. is such a great counselor. She is willing to check pull-ups at a moments notice. Katie L. chases softballs as if they are butterflies, however she is rumored to be better at softball than her sister Sarah. Skev’s sister divulged the secret that Skev is the actual voice for the Pillsbury Doughboy.

Dan C., who celebrated 2 birthdays this summer, likes to think of himself as Babe Ruth and was seen hitting homeruns out of Obear Park. Hayley M. was seen gazing into Connor’s eyes at trivia. Everyone got to see how cute Joclyn B. and Nicole B. were back in the day when Jenna passed around one of her pictures from the past at the CIT bash. Nick D. likes to work the room while doing karaoke to “Semi-Charmed Kind of Life.”

Sam Sto., Sarah L., and Collette F. were again trying to perfect their “Lady Marmalade” act at karaoke. Too bad J.C. has to wait until next summer to perform her Jay-Cee act. Kristina L. received a great insult from a camper the other day. Sarah L. used to make homemade cookies to suck up to people but now she just settles for Dunkin Donuts for the rest of the Jr. staff. Sam Sta. has great fashion sense with his colorful vest. Look out Tim Gunn! Kelsey F. has been a good third wheel for Marco and Regan this summer. He has continuously showed up late at trivia and sat with the lovely couple. Max M. showed off his driving skills by successfully making it to Obear with the mini golf course in his truck.

What will Sam Sto. do when she is at college, after being in the habit of waiting for a wake-up call from Tim everyday all summer? Cassie P. couldn’t avoid the plunge into the water at Cranes, as the guys were fighting over who could throw her in. Poor Jackie R., lost in the eyes of Kris M., tripped over a child while skating to Lady GaGa.

Ryan L. admitted why he has walked home from so many shifts as night ranger: he didn’t know how to dial out from the office phone. Scott B., alias “eagle eye”, was watching for anyone putting things into coolers during homecoming and subbing for other staff members. Just a word to the wise, don’t call Will “Willy!” Josh has trouble turning off the radio while trying to talk over the radio. Jeremy S., who has a soft spot for the song “Hey Jude, “ loved going to Canobie and Cranes.

The lifeguards never had to save anyone this summer. Ben C., Pat W., and Peter T. have made a fashion statement with their “short shorts Fridays.” They could have tried to save our eyes from the sight of them, however.

We wish Emily W. well at her new job down south and wish all the other guards much success in their sports and academics. They are in love with the rangers since they never have to bring their equipment down to the beach.

We hope you all have a great year at school, work or just bumming around. Thanks for all your hard work. Until next summer…

Homecoming Week is almost at a close and that means... another Rec Rag! Enjoy, there's only one left! AHHHH!

Rec Rag 3rd Edition - Summer 2011

Wow, session 3 has come and gone. Two weeks of summer 2011 to go. It has been a busy two weeks since we last put out the Rec Rag. Inquiring eyes and ears have been checking for any possible “dirt.” We really want to include everyone in the last edition, even if we have to make up things.

The Lip Sync was a success, even if it was the first time there was a rain delay. Parents got familiar with each other in the “circus tent.” Staff got to really know their campers and playground kids. Hopefully everyone had put on plenty of deodorant prior to the event. Kayla D. stayed in the background for the first time during the Lip Sync Extravaganza. Robbie D. and Monica C. aged about 59 years waiting for the Lip Sync to continue. Corey M. and Megan B. were very serious on stage, trying to remember all the correct moves. Sam S. and Ryan L. proved to be a great team by putting on a great performance with their kids, even though Ryan had rejected a perfectly fine cup of hot coffee from her earlier in the week. Tim Mc. certainly didn’t reject the French congratulations from Sam S. when he found out he was hired for a job. Matt M. received a sweet thank you smooch after delivering Jocelyn C. a chicken kabob salad. Newbie Ryan M. has been seen flirting with Janessa B. Later that evening Bill was asked to leave the P.O. to change into another shirt. Speaking of the P.O., Kris M. let his hair down and was dancing very closely with Sarah L. Tim and Sam St. remind Kris M. of Brendon and Rachel from Big Brother. Tim took his intense dance moves to the floor doing the “Dougie” along with Jackie R. and many other staff members.

The Adventure Camp staff survived a stormy trip to Six Flags. Matt M. may never volunteer to chaperone again. Tim picked a good one to injure his ankle for the 10th time this summer. If anyone sees him without a brace on, please yell at him. Jackie R. embarrassed herself by mistaking her sister Jocelyn for Joscelyn R.K. on the phone and giving her the cold shoulder and talking to her in an anything-but-friendly tone. Cassie continues to behave herself and not do anything newsworthy… or hasn’t been caught yet. Oh, this just in… there is dirt on her. Tim and Kris couldn’t stop crying after laughing so hard watching Cassie and Jackie jumping into the Ipswich River. Although the water was only 3 feet deep, they continued to struggle to prevent their lovely pedicured feet from touching the bottom. The part they underestimated was how thick the seaweed or “river weed” was, which was pulling them down like quicksand. They literally spent 10 minutes not knowing what to do. Cassie was also excited to go to the Red Sox game with the A.C. staff and seeing Jacoby hit a walk-off homerun. She and Jackie also asked if “mounding” was allowed… they’re most certainly pink hats.

The Tykes staff continues to work hard singing songs, eating snack, and looking for hermit crabs. A little Tyker has learned how to do faux painting this session. They were also amused that a child could not say his last name. Even Katie L. knows that since she has her emergency card. Skev, ever the concerned director and citizen, in general, has been concerned about the health status of the Trivia Man. If anyone has any information, please let him know. Marco continues to suck up to Gail to try to get a raise by bringing her homemade pasta and soup. Ryan L. was overheard mentioning that he wanted to surprise Meghan N. with an ice cream; but don’t tell her.

ACME staff members have been pretty low-key the past two weeks. Dan C. revealed the secret that he is not a confident swimmer by wearing a life preserver while in the dunk tank. Hayley M. proved she is brave enough to conquer the “burning skin” Alpine Slide unscathed, as well as the Mountain Coaster at Attitash. Everyone is waiting to see how Connor M. looks after having his wisdom teeth out…probably less scary than he looked at the Luau. The beard might hide the swelling and bruising.

The lifeguards have had difficulty with one physical exercise each morning: bringing equipment to the beach. They are saving their energy for their sports tryouts in a few weeks. Too bad none of them are studying to be taxidermists, since a dead seagull and “bunnycat” were found on the beach. Maybe it’s a good idea that they don’t rake the beach every (or any) day. Who knows what else they would find.

The rangers are causing problems, as usual. Will M., who needs to go to the Y with Tim and Sam S. was seen struggling to bring up a tool box of medical supplies that was as long as he is tall. Will also received a scolding from a “senior employee” for “trashing” Jocelyn C. on the radio. Molly F. and Ryan M. are still looking everywhere for the naked person on the beach. Josh, crying in a corner, was seen receiving kisses on his boo-boo from young people in red shirts. Friends With Benefits has proven to be a popular movie this week. Scott B., with a mystery date, saw Joclyn B. Jocelyn C., Mike C., and Matt M. heard Sam Stan. laughing in the crowd and saw him “macking” later with his G.F.

BREAKING NEWS - Someone abandoned a cat at Lynch Park, so we now have a mascot. Meet Panther, who is residing in Bruce's office until we find a good home for this healthy, friendly, 5 year old male cat. Anyone want a nice cat?

Rec Rag 2nd Edition - Summer 2011

Well, we have reached the half-way mark of our summer program. We were able to dig up some more dirt on some of our staff. Remember, it is our goal to include every Bev. Rec. staff member in one of our publications.

Park attendance has continued to increase and will most likely stay in the high numbers with the anticipation of the annual Lip Sync Extravaganza, which is not a competition… right Adventure Camp? Matt Mc. looks like he is a character in “Driving Miss Daisy,” being chauffeured to the parks by Bill each day. One day he seemed a bit surprised when he received a “bikini text” meant for “another guy”. He did appreciate it, though. Bill is working his way up to being a guest choreographer for “So, You Think You Can Dance.” Speaking of personal service with a smile, Will M. has a personal driver in Jocelyn C., who picks him up from park each day. A secret was recently revealed regarding Matt M.’s sleeping habit… of occasionally sleeping on the floor. Ryan Lane wants everyone to know that he is the perfect prototype for the male physique. All along we thought it was Kris M! Justin G. has a little competition of his own going on, as he challenged an Adventure Camper to a magic duel. Maybe we will see this at the next special event. At the Cartoon Catastrophe everyone was lucky enough to see Ryan L. (perfect male prototype) and Sam S. awkwardly slow dance. Corey M. looked beautiful as Jasmine. Will Mc. had some great tights.

Sarah L.’s name came up a few times this week. One time someone asked why her name is usually included in a sentence related to Cat Woman. In fact, we do have the perfect cat for her if she wants. Hopefully someone will adopt it. Some do have a question for Sarah: “Were you texting Max M. while he was leaving trivia the other night?” Fellow Acme Jr. instructor, Jenna J., was spotted in Target preparing her outfit for the special event.

Dan C. probably wasn’t too thrilled to have the Director title when his alarm “malfunctioned.” Connor looked excited as he wore the “Accidental Tourist” camera around his neck and directed his kids to the next station. Nargaret showed their ambition to be future members of Blue Man Group.

The Tykes have been making emergency cards… and that includes instructor Katie L., who made one to remember her address, phone number, and directions on what to dial for 911. Skev, in between running from crafts, the beach, and setting up sprinklers, revealed his itinerary for his romantic Vermont weekend getaway. We have copies in the office, if anyone is interested. The happy couple has enjoyed fishing for stripers and watching the latest Harry Potter movie at the IMAX in Reading. Alyssa C., who has worked at all the camps except Adventure, was asked out by a 4 yr. old.

It was revealed that newbie Jeremy S. and Aaron S. are cousins, although they don’t exchange presents when they see each other on Christmas. Jeremy had a special female friend join him for lunch. Josh M. is back and hasn’t stopped painting since he returned. He paints so slow that he never gets any on himself. Jocelyn C’s backside showed that she really gets into the paint.

Kris M. does seem to be in better shape to keep up with his younger male sidekick. Jackie R. was seen dancing with 2 guys at Rockefellers. Tim, a.k.a. Cinderella, was anything but happy having to move Sam S. car the other day. Kris M. said leaving the group will negatively affect his evaluation.

When the sun is blazin and the summer gets hot, your Bev Rec blogger is too busy to write. Here is the first of 4 summer Rec Rags, so you can catch up on the gossip. Another will be out shortly.

Rec Rag Edition 1 - 2011
Summer is upon us. It is time to start living the dream!! Welcome back to all the veterans and good luck to the newbies. Two weeks have passed and now it is time for another edition of the Rec Rag. For all of you newbies the Rec Rag is a gossip and informational bi-weekly column…we have been compared to People Magazine… get the picture.

Time for some off-season news. It is a huge surprise that the office is still standing. Ranger Connor reported a “branch” fell on the roof of the office. This “branch” took down our chimney with it and was actually half of a tree. Thanks Connor for your wonderful reporting skills. For all of you that have not heard Skev raving about the infamous Leslie, it has been confirmed that she is real and was sited at the park last Sunday with Skev getting her tan on. It has also been rumored that he is planning a weekend getaway for them… sounds like it’s getting serious. On the topic of weekend getaways, Sam Stokes and Tim McAuliffe went on a short trip to New Jersey because Sam missed Ronnie so much since the last time she saw him. Rumor is that Sam Stokes might be changing her name to Sammi Sweetheart in the near future.

Speaking of couples there are still some Rec couples going strong. This year we have Josh M and Molly F, Matt M and Jocelyn C, Marco E and Regan G, Sam Stokes and Tim M, Kelsey F and Ben C and last but not least Corinne W and Peter T. Rec love is in the air. <3 No wonder it was so hard to make so many camp placements this year based on that list. Sarah Lane has been missing out on the Rec Romance and was heard asking, “why can’t I mate with a goat? What if I was blind and didn’t know?” Sorry Sarah we don’t have any goats on staff, but Molly F was seen sporting some nice new Zebra print shorts.

We welcome in all of our new staff members. One that is sticking out in our minds is our new Ranger Scott Blanchette. He has been seen driving around with the gate box on top of his car and has spent a lot of time chasing dumpsters down hills. Jocelyn C has hopped on board as the new Head Ranger. Bruce has been irritable lately, I wonder if it is because Jocelyn has been slacking in the food department.
Special events have been going fabulously. ‘Nargaret’ have turned into quite the power couple. Will and Connor have been shopping for their outfits in ridiculous places. Joscelyn Ruelle-Kersker spotted them basically everywhere they went. But they have yet to let us down with their costume choices so keep up the good work. Word on the street is Hayley Mahan is really into the costumes! Another employee who has made quite the impression on the staff is Justin Grabowski. His short shorts were said to have harassed Jocelyn C everytime she looked at him. But Skev said he “liked it if you can pull it off.”

The lifeguards are always good at trying to stay off the radar. It is very hard for them to stay out of the Rec Rag though because they all seem to be related or have dated each other or in some cases both. However with less beaches to watch over then ever before it still seems like they have been complaining more than ever. Pat Wilson has been training for Shark Week and has won the award for lifeguard of the week due to his quick pick up of a dead seal on the beach. The lifeguards have been pretty upset about the sun and cannot seem to function without a canopy. They were spotted looking like Siamese twins huddled under an umbrella. Better hope they don’t melt before the summer’s over.

It's my birthday! The office threw me a lil' celebration including delicious cake, ice cream, chips and fresh salsa. Delish! There were presents and balloons and the traditional Bev Rec birthday hat. It was awesome and I thank everyone wholeheartedly.

The summer is heating up and everyone from Margaret Hall to Steve Lunn has been in the office, working hard to plan the best activities for their programs. Woo-hoo! Get that paperwork in, folks!!

Josh Melanson has left the building. Our loyal and hardworking HRMC has left us for a more grown up and health care providing job in IT at Sports Medicine North. We miss him terribly, but we’re psyched to have Jocelyn Cassola in his place. Anyway, in celebration of Josh’s last week, we did some awesomely fun things. On Monday we partook in a sundae explosion at Putnam Pantry…

I know, I know… it’s been too long since we rapped at ya. Well things have been crazy at Bev Rec and eight hours just aren’t enough time in the work day to design the brochure, update the website, go to meetings, interview, learn this new cell phone, build a mini golf course, feed the homeless, apprehend Gaddafi and hang chili pepper lights in honor of Cinco de Mayo.

Weekend Warriors

At Bev Rec, we never stop working. Weekends are no exception. On Sunday, Bruce and I (oh, and the Honorable Mayor Bill Scanlon) were judges for the Beverly Dog Park Spring Bone-Anza Event. We had the difficult task of judging two-dozen captivating canines on their friendliness, behavior and spiffed-up attire. It was tons of fun and it raised lots of money for the up and coming Beverly Dog Park!

It’s a Pot Boiler

Some days are wonderful, full of sunshine and daffodils, pleasant conversation, good deeds and thin mints. Other days are downright dismal, like the week some of we Bev Rec-ians are experiencing.

Bruce and I had challenging phone conversations yesterday and guess what, they're not resolved! We have to have MORE! It’s times like these I must remember to be more like Barack Obama; calm, cool and collected. It’s not easy, so I decided to print out a picture of the 45th president and stick it to my window… Whew… that’s better.

Josh is hard at work, as usual, painting and tidying up the place. One of the round windows for the Carriage House came in and now he’s painting it. Be careful with that, Joshie, it costs a fortune!

Tomorrow we’re celebrating the Red Sox (pooh-pooh, they are so stinky) with a cookout. Burgers, dogs, pasta salad, the works! If you have a couple bucks and an appetite, come join us!

The new Special Event Coordinators, Jocelyn Cassola and Nick Doig just handed in the schedule of events for summer 2011. I won’t reveal anything yet, but its chock full of new and loveable, fun stuff. More info on that in a few weeks.

Interviews are coming up! Candidates, wear a nice outfit, spritz your tongue with Binaca and get ready for 30 minutes of intense questioning. Nah, it’s not that intense, but we do take interviews very seriously and there is a lot of competition, so come to your appointment ready to impress us!

I'm typing this blog entry from West Palm Beach, Florida where I'm spring breaking! Cowabunga, dudes! Sorry to hear about snow in Massachusetts, here it is a balmy 74° at 9:45am. I heard MTV is moving Spring Break coverage HERE tomorrow, so I plan find them and try to meet Pauly D and Snoop! Think Stella will be embarassed to see her Mom dancing in the Spring Break pool with sweet Snooki? Happy April Fool's Day!

On a serious note, today is Crock Pot Friday and we're celebrating the Red Sox home opener today with lasagna. Go Sox and go Italian food!

Hello Blogfans! It’s been so long since we rapped at ya, but lots to do with so little time in the work day. Here's a summary of the last two weeks in Bev Rec-dom…

Bruce and Joscelyn went to the MRPA Annual Conference in Hyannis. We attended educational sessions, networked with colleagues and attended meetings. A good time was had by all and even more noteworthy, the van made it all the way there and back. It actually wasn’t until last week that the van endured another attack by grimy vandals. You get back threefold what you put out, criminals.

St. Patrick’s Day was observed by the Bev Rec staff with green clothes and cupcakes. I ate corned beef and cabbage for dinner that night. Didn’t bother getting a McDonald’s Shamrock Shake, after consuming a way less than perfect specimen last month.

Marco and Regan worked at the Hamilton-Wenham Kids Fair, representing our camps, despite the fact that all the fair details never made it to them. Thanks for figuring it out!

We had a Crock Pot Wednesday last week, dining on Italian Wedding Soup. It was followed by Leftover Thursday. We plan on celebrating the Red Sox home opener this Friday with Crock Pot Lasagna.

Interviews of new supervisors have commenced and contracts will be sent tomorrow. New Playground Director, Tykes Director and Special Event Coordinators, will be crowned. Thanks to all who expressed interest, sorry there aren't actual crowns.

A BHS Sports Hall of Famer himself, Bruce attended the 2011 induction dinner at the Danversport last week. Someone remembered that his name is kind of featured in a Peter Frampton song.

The Skev Report – Skev Montague has been elusive, but made a grand re-appearance this morning. He has a new sparkle in his eye and a new spring in his step, and no, it’s not because he already has Red Sox tickets! Tutoring is almost at an end and I’m sad, because I learned a lot. Skev and I talked about this year’s Coachella lineup, Netflix vs. Redbox, the movie “Hamlet 2”, trivia and his upcoming trip to a local ski resort where he doesn’t plan to ski.

Josh has been so hard at work, down in the Carriage House and on the first floor of the office. Here's a sample of the new paint job on the floor, alongside the old paint...

Josh remarked that he “attacks” female prey and asked me to post this, “You are either in the Subaru or out of it.” I, for one, am in it.

UPDATE: We just saw a seven or eight-year-old boy in the field between the play structures, poop in a paper cup, held by his Mom, who also wiped his butt after he was done!! Geez!! You are not alone at Lynch Park; Gail, Bruce, Josh, Tim and I are here and we witnessed the entire thing! The Mom appeared to take the poop cup with her, and the kid scootered off to enjoy the rest of his day.

Holy moly... this is a story that will be told and re-told for years.

If your contract is not here when we make new hire decisions, we'll assume that you aren't coming back and replace you. What a tragedy that would be, if you really intended to come back. Landfill

We returned to Lynch Park this morning, pleased to see a whole lot more grass and dirt! Not so psyched about all the trash that’s been uncovered, though. Someone had a great time in the Rose Garden, I just found their leftover beer bottles, fireworks and Styrofoam darts… weird! Honestly, do you ever throw trash on the ground?? There are plastic bags, Starbucks cups, coke cans and paper all over the park so SOMEONE must be a litterbug!

Gail gave our resident Beatlemaniac another item to add to her collection, a Beatles t-shirt! It’s so cute and it’s green, so she can wear it for St. Patty’s Day, too. Now all she needs are some Beverly Panthers orange leggings. I just hope she goes easy on the green milk this year.

Speaking of Beatles, the last poll revealed that 36% of you love John, 27% love Ringo and the remaining 37% were torn between Paul and George. VOTE IN THE NEW POLL - I think you are all litterers!

Josh is out sick today. Feel better soon, someone has to finish the mysterious wooden box.

Kayla Doig won an award (and got lipstick all over her face) at Drama Fest this weekend! Congratulations! Winning!

The Skev Report - Skevlie Sheen wondered aloud today why he hasn't had funny quotes in the blog lately, and then he remarked that the songs on Yellow Submarine weren't all "listenworthy". Ahhhh, the magic of Skev! He has been on a book and DVD buying spree lately, taking advantage of the sales at Borders and Amazon. He just got Planet Earth for $29.09!! He's taking the MTEL tomorrow. Before he left, he engaged Stella in a staring contest, which she mistook as a blinking contest and hilarity ensued...

Power Tools & Submarines

Josh has been hard at work on a mysterious wooden box. Not sure what he's going to do with it when he's finished, but it looks like it could hold a lot of Stella's toys..

Visits, visits everywhere... Kris Melanson was in the house, as was Bill Bresnahan, Jenna Johnson with campers Tori and Will Ullmann and Emily Walk's Mom popped by to collect her supervisor polo! The Skevmaster General said he would be here, but never showed up.

Stella is finally watching Yellow Submarine and I think she likes it! It's pretty weird, though. Psychedelic.

Instead of Crock Pot Friday, we're having Lunch Breakfast tomorrow. Gail is bringing in the skillet and we're making pancakes, bacon and Josh says he's going to attempt to cook home fries. I suspect a few eggs will be scrambled or fried, but you're going to have to wait until tomorrow to find out.

The last poll showed that most of you would like to see Bev Rec offer, "Shark Wrestling", "Hiking", "Parkour" and "Ballroom Dancing" as classes this fall. Innnnteresting... NEW poll to the right, bottom of the green box.

The Skev Report – Again this week Skevkin Donuts was in the office and I missed him. We DID get together last night to work on some math for my big test. Skev certainly does know his math, he had neatly solved every equation in preparation and was patient with me as I struggled through them! We’re meeting again this Saturday because we only got through problem #8. A word of advice, don’t waste $4 on the Chicken on Flatbread with Hummus Artisan Snack Plate at Starbucks…

I was at a meeting in Weymouth for most of the day yesterday, but I heard that Ivy and Hayley Mahan stopped by, as did Kris Melanson!

Jean is asking for suggestions for Crock Pot Friday. Good, healthy lunches that take 4 hours (or less) to cook. Bring it!

What a difference a day makes... well, a day and an email from Josh Melanson! Overnight we gained three more Rec Rag enthusiasts (for a current total of 19) and we are SO thankful. You rule.

In other news, the sun is shining and the snow is melting. We've seen Tim McAuliffe twice this week and it's pretty clear that Stella has a crush on him. Watch out Sam!

Molly Forman was also in the office today, hanging out and lending moral support to Joshie before his big interview at Osram/Sylvania. Best of luck, although he's doing such a great job, we never want Josh to leave.

Defining “Chach”

Camp registration today! We worked furiously to be sure that all who sent in forms by 4:30pm, EST on February 10, were registered, wait listed, etc. We’re still working on it, but neon green postcards should be mailed out to all families in two weeks. Best of luck to everyone, we sincerely appreciate your patronage.

Josh Melanson, HRMC and Jack of All BRD Trades, has many funny moments, but today he busted out one of the best quotes ever. Now, I don’t remember exactly how he put it, but he referred to Mary (Woolaver) O’Neill’s baby bump as a “chach”, saying something like, “Now she has a chach!” OMG, it was uproarious! We thought that Kris Melanson was the only one, but now every pregnant staff member will have the dubious distinction of bearing a chach. Only, the pregnant chaches will be slightly more refined and lovable.

In other Josh news, he has challenged himself to bake something Valentine’s-themed for the office on Monday. Cannot wait.

The Skev Report – Skev-ra oh la la made an appearance at 55 Ober Street today. Just checking up on camp reg and providing moral support. He has been looking through my GMAT study materials and I think we will begin the tutoring process at Starbucks (although I am a Dunks girl) or Panera next week. He says parking at US Taekwondo has been a nightmare and has been looking for people to go with him to an LCD Soundsystem show in NY. He passed on ordering Tapas (I lifted my 7 year boycott today) because he had to get to work. He wore Stella’s princess crown, to make her laugh, and I almost got a picture! Skev, the Prince of Virginia Avenue.

Bruce was home today, watching 24 and resting up after surgery. Get well, see you soon, Boss!

Camp Crystal Lake

The sun is shining and snow is melting! Lynch Park looks like the moon. Come check it out and don’t forget your sled or snowshoes.

Summer camp registration is Friday! The office will be closed so we can quickly and efficiently process registration. We wish every applicant the best of luck!

Speaking of summery stuff, I'm meeting with Directors this week to discuss staffing. You may remember that we’re moving people around and assembling new “Dream Teams”. I’ve had quite a few emails lately from staff who say they’ve heard there is space in this camp or that park and I’m telling you now, I don’t know for sure who is returning and who is not until I get contracts back and contracts have not even been typed up. I have not yet received word from anyone, stating that they will not be back.

Soooo, if you are not returning, let me know, ASAP! Just send an email or a text, simple! You won’t be in trouble, we wish you well and thank you for your service to our fair city. If you want to move from camps to parks or vice versa, I’d like to know that, as well.

The Skev Report – Skev Voorhees and Joclyn Belanger worked at the Glen U camp fair last weekend. Their table was fairly busy and rocking with a Lip Sync video, but they found plenty of time to eat free breakfast, lunch and chat, chat, chat. Lots of chatting going on. Skev is going to be my math tutor soon, I think I will finally understand geometry…

Bruce is out of the office for the next few days. Gail, Jean, Josh and I will be here to assist you.

We’re taking Gail’s desk out and moving a smaller one in. Lots of changes around this office and they’re all looking good.

Blue Thursday

Back to work and school! It's so nice to see a sunny day, even if the air is chilly. Is there really another storm on the way Saturday? Do you have enough shovels to dig your way out of this one? Take our new poll (green box, to the right) and let us know.

The Skev Report - Skev Five-O made another appearance at Bev Rec today. He told us that he is now on the second season of Lost and he loves it. He gave me his new email address for my files. He is in charge of February vacation activities for U.S. Taekwondo and we're sure that he will come up with some gems, just like he does for us at Bev Rec. His team, "Science" has been dominating the trivia scene on Sports & Entertainment night. He is working at the Glen U camp fair this weekend and agreed to bring his laptop to show last year's Lip Sync contest. He also filled me in on how The Big Lebowski ends and, "The Game of Things".

Skev asked me for his summer employment contract, but I don't have those ready yet. I hope to have them in the next two weeks, but with all the exciting new changes, it's taking a while to meet with the necessary people and sort it all out. All in good time...

Snowpocalypse

Not sure whether we’ll make it into the office tomorrow, so here are the details on the past week-and-a-half…

Stella’s birthday party and Crock Pot Friday went together nicely. We ate chicken, rice, salad and a chocolate cake all courtesy of Gail! I just realized that I owe her $4 for the meal… Everything was really delicious and Stella was mesmerized by her huge piece of cake! She truly loved every single gift she was given, but has already gotten the most use out of the Beatles on Ed Sullivan DVD that Bruce gave her. We’ve watched it 58 times. She’s got a ticket to ri-hi-hiiiide! Thanks to everyone who celebrated or wished Stella a happy birthday! Here are some pics of the Rec party…

The Skev Report – Skev Tut finally visited when we were all there! Woo-hoo! He did shave and I think he got a haircut, as well. He is planning to see a bunch of live music in the weeks ahead and hopes to get some Red Sox tickets for the summer. Rec outing!! He wants to save up for a new television and has been watching a lot of Lost reruns. We talked about the summer and contracts and he’s totally sending his back.

Josh put up a Stella-sized hook so she can hang up her own coat.

Automotive Narcolepsy

Another storm is brewing. Are you ready? Get your sleds out, people. According to the last poll, only 30% of you have utilized the hill for winter sports, so far in 2011. Get out and get moving!

It's amazing, Josh did NOT fall asleep during the western Mass trip last week. He usually falls asleep on the way to Home Depot in Danvers! We’re not sure what to call this disorder other than Automotive Narcolepsy. Going to have to verify it with WebMD.

The Skev Report – Skevren Colanto finally made it into the office last week! Unfortunately, Gail was the only one here to greet him. We learned he is swearing off Foxwoods for a while, he shaved his face and has been shoveling like the rest of us. He says he will visit again this week, perhaps in conjunction with Crock Pot Friday.

Camp registration and camp questions have begun! It’s summer here. Hopefully the brochure will be delivered today, geez.

We are now accepting applications for paid and volunteer summer employment!

Crock Pot Friday

Another Friday, another delicious crock pot lunch. We all contributed to the best crock pot meal yet, Taco Stew. It was full of beans, tomatoes, corn and cheesy goodness. Even Stella took part and earned a piece of chocolate after finishing her entire bowlful.

Molly came by to hang out with Stella, thank you so much! They did puzzles and drew pictures of princesses, and just had a great time. So awesome!

Still no sign of Skev, despite repeated attempts by Josh to lure him down to Lynch Park.

Many changes here at the office. Josh is almost through painting it green, and is adding another chalkboard (possibly a magnetic one!) to Stella’s area. Check out some pictures of us cleaning and moving stuff around. I think my image is making it’s blog debut…

Chaos

I know it’s been a long time since I rapped at ya, but…

The holidays came and went, and we were all in and out of the office on vacation. We had a Merry Christmas, as evidenced by the happy smiles you see here at the office gift swap…

Stella got SO many gifts and was thankful for every one. Josh gave me a Robert Pattinson calendar, a lil Rob every month. Gail gave a smorgasboard of gifts, including the best little flashlight ever. Jean gave beautiful scarves and jewelry. I donated chicks to families in need across the world, on behalf of each person in the office. Bruce gave us the gift that keeps on giving… a Keurig machine! We’re out of our minds with caffeine.

Our volunteers at Beverly’s New Year helped with the costumes for the Grand Procession and DJ J.Mel brought his musical stylings to the masses on Cabot Street. Good times, and then we were off to parties and Jersey Shore marathons by 7:30pm. Pauly D. even reserved a costume for the parade, check it…

We were honored with a visit from one of our fave Rec alums, Adam Szajgin, his GF, Annika and their dog, Ohso. Adam says Ohso is very clean and a dragon warrior. He loves and hates the dog, but we all thought it was pretty cute. Well, it kind of cried a lot and it did bite Josh. He loves his time spent in Mass, including celebrating Hayley’s 16th birthday. He says Ivy is losing her mind and force-feeding he and Annika cookies. He saw Skev at the Onion (WE haven’t seen him since Xmas break) AND Mike Cassola “dancing so vigorously” with a young lady. He is still living in Cali, pursuing a career as a comedian/writer and still working at the bakery to the stars. He promises to follow this blog and we will check his out, too, at www.oh-dear-god.com. When he is rich and famous, will we still see him? Will he donate millions to the Carriage House Renovation project? Only time will tell.

Josh is going nuts painting the office. He painted this blackboard (so Bruce can tell us where he’s going) in the hallway…

The Skev Report – NO Skev Report because we just plain haven’t seen him. We were going to see Black Swan last week, but it didn’t work out and now he’s not answering any texts or FB messages. I heard that he was chilling at Foxwoods over the weekend, but Skev has not confirmed or denied. Skev-ster, where are you?

Molly Forman's cat died yesterday. RIP, Pumpkin.

Tomorrow is Crock Pot Friday and we’re having Taco Stew.

Bruce did not receive the Shake Weight, a puppy, a lawnmower or a Superbowl ring for Xmas. Vote in the new poll and help Nick Doig choose a Lip Sync song.

RIGHT NOW – We're playing “Name That Tune”, Josh is painting the main office “Spirit Whisper”, Gail is writing down class numbers for Rec Trac and Bruce is meeting with a Playground Equipment guy at Lindsay Park.

We’re Not on the Naughty List

We have been lucky over the past few days to be visited by the Ghost of Christmas Past (Jay Comeau!) and the Ghost of Christmas Present (Michael Andruskiewicz!). Jay had a lot of complaining to do about the snow, he misses AZ already! He is finally going to be working for the Department of Homeland Security, but has to start at the bottom working in airport security. Oh no – pat downs! Eventually he wants to be an Air Marshall. I feel safer already! He has a really short haircut and a full set of blonde facial hair. He didn’t mention any ladies, but knowing Jay, there is a special Arizonian he’s been spending time with.

The Skev Report – Skevtastic was in the house on Tuesday. He came in wearing this red and black checked hat and I wish I took a pic of it. He dropped off some delicious muffin loaves from his special place, The Gingerbread Factory. He saw Rec alum, Adam Szajgin, at The Anchor.

Rec Party today! There are gifts and food and good cheer. We’re only here half a day, so if you’re around, come in and visit. If we don’t see you until the new year, celebrate safely.

Leftover Monday

The last Crock Pot Friday menu was Sloppy Joe’s and salad (although YOU voted for chicken wings!). Smelled delish, but I didn’t try it. So much was left, we instituted Leftover Monday. We won’t be in the office this Friday, but we will have Holiday Brunch Thursday while we exchange gifts. Wonder what Bruce is getting the ladies this year…

The Skev Report – Skev-ger Woods was in the office last week, but I only saw him for a second. He volunteered at the Holcroft Park Tree Lighting Festival this weekend and knew a lot of the kids. He was wearing a cool golf cap and yes, he is still rocking a bit of scruffy beard. Beard-vember has bled into December! He helped Stella hang her ornament on the tree and even sang Christmas carols. He and I were the only ones who knew the second verse of Jingle Bells by heart! Soon Miss Fanny Bright was seated by my side...

We are so thankful to have the best staff in the world. Six awesome counselors volunteered their time to play with the kids at the Holcroft Park Tree Lighting. It means a lot to the neighborhood and to me. I hope to see even more staff at the next community event!!

It’s beautiful at Lynch with snow covering everything. Come see it, while it lasts, and bring your sled!

Crock Pot Friday

The first ever Bev Rec Crock Pot Friday was born today! We all contributed ingredients and then Gail, Jean and Josh put together a delicious lasagna in Gail’s crock pot, located on top of the file cabinet, next to the fax machine and pencil sharpener. The Skev Report – Sexy Skevvie (a nickname he coined, people) checked in with via speakerphone. He was listening to a great tune, “Tempted” by Squeeze. He's been working out like a maniac and I was worried to hear that he spent one full hour on the elliptical. He clarified, saying he really spent 45 minutes, just rounded up to one hour. He spent yesterday toning his legs. He is not catering this weekend, instead he's going to Boston with Josh and maybe out with Bruce’s Bad Father’s Club. We miss him and he promises to visit next week. Awesome! In the last poll, 30% of you voted that Mike would be the next thing to go missing at Lynch. So far, that’s true. Captain Dusty’s, the falcon and Lynch Beach are still here.

It’s Fun Beating Kids at Chess

The Skev Report – Skevvie Doo told us last week that it's been really fun beating the U.S. Taekwondo kids at chess. He got a new phone for free and came in wearing his bluetooth. He wasn’t talking to anyone on it, though. His beard is very full, so much so he planned on getting a trimmer that day. He loves listening to Pandora and prefers a “Soul” themed station that he customized. Speaking of soul singers, Skev also remarked that Aretha Franklin’s, “Natural Woman” really gets him through the day. I couldn’t believe that he didn’t have stories from his high school reunion, other than that it was fun. B-O-R-I-N-G. There’s an epic tale in there, I know it!

I case you haven’t heard, BHS won the Superbowl! Woo-hoo! Bruce had a blast this season as a coach and is wearing his black and orange today to celebrate. Josh made Beverly cookies and Gail made a cake with eggnog frosting. We’re compiling a photo album of all the Bev Rec staff who played, coached, cheered or marched. Also want pics of staff members who attended the game. If you have pics, send them to me at jruelle@beverlyma.gov, please!

THE BEST OF NORTH POLE CALLING – Two more forms came in, asking our Santas to mention that the kids are, “doing great going on the potty” and “going in the big girl potty now”. Will the kids be freaked out that Santa knows that?

Something’s Missing…

First Thing Missing – Another tree from the ACME Jr. side of Lynch Park. A majestic old oak was rotten and hollowed out inside and taken down by a tree service first thing this morning. It was a sad sight and it kept me from parking behind the building. Blah.

Second Thing Missing – Me, I had the day off yesterday to finish xmas shopping. Pandora and Toys R' Us are now the proud owners of my hard-earned money.

Third Thing Missing – Wallpaper in the main office. Josh has been arriving early and leaving late, a result of non-stop wallpaper removal. We haven’t decided what color to paint the clean, new walls. Gail thinks I should be in charge of choosing, but I can't handle the responsibility. In a past poll, you helped decide to paint the office purple and I hope that sticks…

Tonight is the Recreation Commission’s annual dinner at the Beverly Depot. Mmmmm, steak… mmmmm, salad bar. Delicious morsels aside, I was forced to prepare an year end report, which was a blessing in disguise because I reflected on all of our 2010 accomplishments. Bev Rec RULES, is basically what I deduced.

No Skev yet this week, but I think he’ll show up soon. He has stories from Thanksgiving Eve and his BHS reunion. I… cannot… wait…

Screwy Computey

The Skev Report - We have "elfed" Skev! Check it out on our Facebook page or click here. Skevvy Lou Who popped in today not only to update us on the growth of his beard, but also to share his MTEL triumph. He feels that he did well on the test, so congrats to him. He played with Stella, chatted with us and watched the now famous video of Marconi Radio. Pretty soon he was off to U.S. Taekwondo and we don't expect to see him again until after T-Giving.

Josh has started stripping wallpaper in the main office. Woo-hoo!

Say a Little Prayer for Skev!

Josh left a copy of the Oriental Trading catalog on my desk yesterday morning, open to a page advertising “Relaxable Pickles.”

Apparently, Molly is reverting back to Snooki mode (leopard-print dress and now pickles!) and planning to buy these stress-relievers for x-mas gifts. Josh is worried that next she’s going to ask for her own tanning booth. GTL and Merry Christmas, Molly!

The Skev Report – Skev-a-reeno popped by and he is sticking with Beard-vember. He's trimmed a few stray whiskers, but is rocking a much fuller array of facial hair. Skev’s taking the MTELs tomorrow, so keep your fingers crossed or say a little prayer for him, Dionne Warwick-style. He’s looking forward to his 5th year BHS reunion and all the after parties that are sure to follow. We watched a slew of YouTube clips, and laughed our heads off. Speaking of clips, I found this short one of Skev at this year's VIP Dinner. Enjoy!

Last week’s poll indicated that on Thanksgiving, most of you plan to watch football, some will sleep in and only one will run the Wild Turkey 5K. No one is preparing the feast, so maybe we need to run more cooking classes.

No Shave November

The Skev Report - We were blessed with a visit from the Skev Piper this morning. He almost immediately declared that he is sporting a beard because it is "No Shave November" and then clarified that it only applies to guys, ladies don't have to participate. He's considering becoming a member of another club, maybe the ICC or the Gloucester Elks. Mike showed us his new western, snap button shirt, which we all liked. Everything is going well at US Taekwondo and he has been busy catering, as well. He is so busy that he only recently caught up on the social scene with Josh and his buds. Skev has challenged me to go to Kitty's on Thanksgivign Eve - my most unfavorite time to publicly socialize. We'll see...

Our last poll was interesting, showing that many people DO give candy to high schoolers, for fear of having their cars egged. What about the Montserrat kids who were canvassing the Cove neighborhood? Is that a case of poor college kids or Halloween enthusiasts? I don't know.

Another Warm, Creepy Day

Soon Lynch will be abuzz with the sound of leaf blowers. Fall has fallen.

The Skev Report - Oh yes, Skev-o-ween popped by! He was sporting a corn-cob pipe, an important piece of his yacht captain costume for work tonight and parties this weekend. Stella and I will visit US Taekwondo for some eyeball pong and treats with Mike and Master Kim. Skev has the holiday spirit, but it's been tough getting his friends out to Salem for all the festivities. He's going to take the train. He remarked that, "you can never truly be happy," but he seemed to be doing pretty well. We checked out the Grassfields menu and it looks pretty good. He's been taking his parents and sister out to dinner and movies lately, so all that taekwondo and catering must be paying off!

Hi, My Name is Bruce Dog…

Pumpkin Fest at Holcroft Park was a success! Four Bev Rec staff members volunteered to paint faces, play basketball and just plain help out. The pumpkins had to be replenished three times and the hot chocolate was completely drained. We stayed until the sun went down and we had a lot of fun.

This morning’s conversation was all about bread and Panera bread bowls. Gail is waiting for a bread cookbook from the library and Jean made a chicken corn chowder and served it in a bread bowl. We have also been talking about pie, apple pie and crisp, ever since Gail baked a delicious apple crisp and Salem Five sent us two pies in the mail. We used our new convection oven to warm them up.

Bruce is moving, since Josh is almost finished painting. Looks like a bright, orange, Beverly sunset in the corner office. I wonder how long he will be able to keep this revamped space neat and tidy?

Visited the Iron Rail Gymnastics Academy this morning and jumped around on the springy floor. It was awesome.

What is up with this crazy warm weather? I mean, it’s nice, but it’s also pretty weird.

Feel the Love

Bruce, Jean, Gail and I worked in the same office today. Close quarters, but we're professionals and we like each other, so it was kinda awesome. Not to mention the fact that Bruce is so quiet, we almost forgot he was in here.

Stella was only in the office for an hour, but made a huge mess. She left papers, toys, blankets, dress-up clothes and food in her wake. She ate every pretzel, piece of Pirate’s Booty, cookie and raisin in sight. She tried to get into the drawer under the printer, but Bruce’s big, comfy chair is blocking it. She drew a sweet picture of a princess “leaning her head back and enjoying the sun” and then signed her name on the top. Amazing penmanship!

She also put on a little fashion show as you can see here…

The Skev Report – We finally got a visit from Skevtin Bieber!! He's sporting a shaggier hairdo and he has a cold. He missed school to visit the doctor and was considerate enough to slather on the Purell. He catered last night and tried some of the prime rib. Too bad it was gross. I think he agreed to be my GMAT math tutor. Woo-hoo! Skev hasn’t heard any good new music lately, but he did see “The Town”.

Mike told us a hilarious story about visiting Russell Orchards as a kid, buying a dozen cider donuts for his family, but eating them all himself that day and puking all night long! BTW – What’s Brewing makes their own, delicious cider donuts. Skev says he wanders in and out of people’s lives (don’t we know it!), is a self-proclaimed pessimist and he feels most text messages are “snarky”. He said while he may appear to have a soft façade, he’s really hard-hearted, kind of like a chocolate turtle. Skev likes the song, “Runaround Sue” and thinks it would be a good Lip Sync song. We agree!

Josh rose to the challenge and baked delicious, delicious chocolate-chip oatmeal cookies. Soooo good.

Josh also pointed out a spooky visitor, relaxing at the little tykes structure… his name tag says “Marvelous Marvin”, but I think he’s more like Michael Myers or Freddy Krueger. Tis the season!

Super Sub & Sanders

Some of us had Super Sub for lunch today and it was delicious. They have a new paint job, too!

I need a math tutor! Studying for the GMAT, I've realized many math concepts I have forgotten (or never learned?) and it's working very much against me. This test costs $250, so I can't afford to fail. Anyone out there good at math?

Bruce’s Sauna

Josh isn't here so Bruce is steaming off wallpaper himself. Good plan, but the phone has been ringing off the hook for him and his office is in disarray, so he’s been answering calls in the main office. The steamer stays on, and the office fills with a semi-stinky, sauna-like haze. It’s therapeutic recreation!

We don’t have special sections anymore because we never see Skev and office baking has been sparse. Might have to start a section on knitting, since Gail has already concocted some cool items for fall and winter.

According our last poll, most of you did not attend the Topsfield Fair. I didn't either, and it has little effect on me, but I do miss candy apples and fried dough.

Online class starts today… it’s time to conquer the GMAT.

October Rules

Beautiful weather so far this fall and it looks like it's peak foliage time this week. Soak it up at Lynch Park, Dane St. Beach, Obear Park... just get outside and visit your neighborhood park.

I signed up for an online class and am psyched to start it on Wednesday. So much to choose from and many classes are under $90. Check it at our Online Instruction Center.

Mexican for lunch two days in a row. Delicious, but dangerous.

Gail baked brownies with peanut butter cup bits. Jean made blondies last week. Awesome. When is Josh going to bake something with his new, birthday brownie pan again? We'll wait and see.

Jean is going to CT with Joclyn for a college visit. While Joc is at meetings and stuff, Jean will be hanging at the local mall. Have fun!

Josh is prepping Bruce's office for painting. Gail and Bruce will shop tomorrow, but it has to be a color that his color blind eyes can see.

I went to see Rock of Ages on Sunday and it was awesome.

Stella has been making a huge mess over here and is relutant to pick it up... so much to do in the last few minutes of the day!

Whomever voted that Stella is going to be a Bad Witch for Halloween, was right. But Bruce Doig would have been awesome!

Now the Bat Makes Sense

I just realized that the bat Skev gave me during the summer (to commemorate my love for vampires) finally makes sense, as a Halloween decoration. Sweet. Now if I can just think of an explanation for the bug guts all over the window…

The Skev Report – Speaking of Skevnotronic, he has been notably absent from the office lately. I know he’s really busy at U.S. Taekwondo and school and tutoring, but we miss his crazy stories. Bruce and I had successful MRPA meetings here yesterday, but I wouldn’t be surprised to get some complaints from our colleagues who crashed into the rocks lining the driveway… whoops! We enjoyed leftover Dunks this morning, delicious pumpkin muffins, yessss!

Long weekend coming up, who’s going to the Topsfield Fair? Wait, maybe that will be the subject of the next poll!!

It's a slow news day, but I’ll try to give you a wrap up here…

Bruce asked Josh to remove a humongous desk from his office. Josh just started hacking it up.

Gail’s cellie has been ringing a lot lately, and she brought in hats she knitted for Stella’s Cabbage Patch Kid, Fiona.

Jean’s daughter, Nicole, went to her first St. John’s Prep dance!

Bruce’s son, Chris, has been helping Roger install software in his new computer and getting free dinner and movies, in return.

I'm psyched for Stella’s picture day and am considering buying new jeans and a fall coat. I worked out at the Y the other day and while I have mad respect, I also had a hard time because I saw too many people I knew and smelled too much terrible body odor.

Too Much Bertucci's

I am maxxed out on Bertucci's. I've been there once a week for the past three weeks. It's just too much.

Bruce and I have meetings tomorrow, but we're not sure who is coming. We are sure that we will be providing breakfast and lunch, even if we're the only ones in attendance.

Josh has been here and at his new job. We are really happy to still have him around because he's an excellent painter. After finishing the hallway and staircase, he painted the bathroom doors downstairs. Come and check it out, it's WAAAAY better than it used to be.

Abandoned Baby or Remote Control Car?

There was a noise surrounding Lynch Park today. It was distressing and it sounded to me like a baby had been abandoned and was crying, an animal was injured and crying, or a remote control car was buzzing around. I went out into the park and found… it was a few guys driving their remote control jeep around the parking lot. Boo.

Josh was here today, risking his life on the tallest ladder in the world, to finish painting the hallway. Jocelyn Cassola warned him that while his new paint job looks nice, it makes the rest of the office look shabby. Great! Now we’ll have to rip all the wallpaper down! Call our feng shui instructor, we need an overhaul.

We lost one of the sweetest Tykers in the world this week. The whole staff has been posting, RIP CK, on Facebook to memorialize him. Here is a picture to commemorate the little friend we lost and his last summer at Tiny Tykes…

Monday NoSunDay

It's a blah Monday at Lynch Park. The space heater is ON! I hear it is going to be this way for a few more days, blaaaah!

It's almost the end of the day and I am still on hold with Adobe. Another unanswered question, another day without Dreamweaver. Anyone out there know where we can get an inexpensive (and legal!) copy? The Friends of Beverly Recreation has non-profit status!

There was a lot going on this weekend, painting, weddings, Momball... somehow our staff survived!! Bruce needs another week off. Josh painted the downstairs bathroom doors. Looks great!

Autumn Leaves

We celebrated Jean’s birthday with gifts and red velvet cake. Great job with the preparations, Gail! Forgot to take pics, but the cake was gorgeous and Jean got to take it home for the fam. Damn fruit flies, if we didn’t have so many, we’d be able to keep cake here!

The Skev Report – Skevaholic was here for the birthday fun! He got a haircut but I couldn’t tell. He claims it’s shorter in the back. He continues to shed pounds, shop for new clothes and relive his years at BHS with old clothes he fits into again. He was wearing some new Gap jeans with an old button down. Skev is rollin in the dough after his last trip to Foxwoods. He’s up $125 from that and poker, but he decided to back off for now and quit while he’s ahead. We reviewed the week in Grey’s Anatomy (“…people want the love and the tears…”) and compared Briscoe teams and teachers. Even though we’re 11 years apart, we still managed to have a few of the same teachers. Ms. Frenette! He’ll find time to visit us again next week.

Busy weekend at Lynch with sports teams and weddings, but our rangers will be holding it down. Josh continues to paint the office, even though he’s got another job. That’s dedication, man.

We’re looking forward to October! Are you? Take our newest poll! The last poll, “Where would would you like to work next summer?”, was voted on by 8 people and each section, Camps, Parks, Beaches and Office got an equal amount of votes!

One million meetings next week, but we’ll update as much as we can.

In other news, it's early but it's not a good week for computers at the BRD. One of mine is on the fritz, so no email AND software we ordered is being held up. Blah. Hopefully Russ and Dennis can work some magic and get me back to computer normalcy, ASAP.

Back to regular work with MRPA tomorrow. Bruce and I have an executive board meeting. Maybe I'll find out about that letter I mysteriously wrote and sent to myself without knowing it.

Beverly Dog Park meeting last night. We discussed their upcoming fundraiser, Howl-O-Ween, on October 16 from 1-3:00pm. It is a costume contest and they have LOTS of raffle prizes, so come have fun and support a Beverly Dog Park.

Shades of Green

The office is getting a new look, inspired by the Spirit Whisper room. Josh is painting the hallways varying shades of green and blue. Speaking of Josh, don't call him an animal lover, even though he does feed and walk Molly's family dogs. He wants all Jersey Shore fans out there to note that Pauly D. is coming to town. Do I smell a Bev Rec field trip (and self tanner)?

The Skev Report - Skevtastik has not been in the office lately, because he has been hard at work at US Taekwondo and as a math tutor. He has been talking about getting a BAC membership, so Gail put a bunch of coupons on his clipboard, including one for a free spa treatment. Lucky! I hear he'll be in for lunch tomorrow, so hopefully we'll have more news then.

Bruce has been chillin in the hospital this week, but don't worry, it's a routine procedure when he has his heart medication changed. We are psyched to have him back on Monday, fit as a fiddle.

Stella started preschool a few weeks ago and she's loving it. She won't divulge much about what she's learning, except a few swear words. She's such a lady, she insists on wearing dresses each day and she always carries a dollar in her huge backpack, in case the ice cream truck drives by.

We're sending out lots of love to the Lyons family and putting together a breakfast/lunch/snack package to help them out while Patrick is in the hospital. We're delivering it tomorrow afternoon, so if you'd like to contribute food or money to it, stop by tomorrow morning! Get well soon, Patrick!

Keep your fingers crossed for us this weekend, our first ever wedding reception is taking place in the Carriage House!

This summer was so busy, we barely had time to blog. Here is the last (4th) edition of this summer’s Rec Rag...

CONGRATULATIONS! You made it! Can you believe the 8 weeks are over? Time flies when you're having fun. We hope everyone is planning on coming back for more fun next summer. Let’s see what’s been happening at camps, parks, the beaches, and office.

Here’s some news from the playgrounds. We want to wish Nick Doig a great birthday week! Did he celebrate with plain cranberry juice like Adam did when he turned 21? Big news was that Matt Mc. got a new haircut… thank God! Will Tim Mc. follow suit? Mike C. has had the policeman/military cut this summer to keep cool. Guess he doesn’t like the feel of his hair blowing in the breeze while cruising in his jeep. We heard Bill B., who certainly doesn’t need a haircut. Has been hanging out with “gun people” while shopping at a local business. Ryan L., who is training for next year’s Beverly Gran Prix, may pull out the guns (waterguns, that is) if you ask him for his cell phone number. Justin G. may be able to figure Ryan’s number out, using his magician skills. He is offering his services at functions or parties to amaze your friends. Stop making fun of him, Lauren. Sherry Z. won a couple of bake-offs, although there wasn’t too much competition this year. We know she enjoys baking and eating veggies. Mentor Conor B. has been a big hit with the female mentors who were fighting for a spot at his playground. Was that when Jocelyn C. was teaching the licking game? Did you know that you can’t feel someone lick your elbow if you don’t know they are doing it? That is something for everyone to try when you are with your friends. Connor Mc. might be feeling a bit foolish after being reprimanded by a lifeguard for using flippers and a mask at Cranes yesterday. Matt M. doesn’t know it yet, but he and Jocelyn C. are breaking up… just joking!!!! Sean C., Jackie R., Jenna J., John O., and Max M. are preparing for a Zombie Apocalypse. Speaking of Max M., we’ve heard he is pretty “popular” this summer!

Now the news from Tiny Tykes. Mary W.O., off to Ireland for a week, could be the designated driver, but they are not renting a car. Bet they will stop at a pub every hour or so to pick up something for her to eat. Rumor has it that she has been spotted peeking through her curtains to see the action at Cove Playground and to keep track of people parking in front of her house. Monica C. got the best present from a camper. Did she whisper hints in the child’s ear? Guess it wasn’t from the child who got stuck in the play structure and Monica and Bryan has a hard time freeing. Good luck to Bryan and Brendan C. and their first year of college. Meghan N. is looking forward to her trip to Disney this coming week. Joclyn B. is glad it is the last day of camp, as she can hardly walk after carrying Tiny Tykers all summer, especially this last week. Their CITs are very good at using their “library voices” at all times.

There wasn’t too much news with the ACME staff. All the lifeguards like Tim Mc. but anyone who is anyone knows that he is taken, right Sam? Aaron S., who gave an “amazing” review of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, alerted the campers that a NSMT/American Idol star was at Lynch this week. Kids were having him sign their arms and hands. Guess they aren’t the cleanest campers if they never wash themselves.

Heather experienced her once-a-summer injury, thanks to a camper. At least it wasn’t a result of Terry C. or Kris M. jumping on her. Terry did enjoy throwing Cassie P. and Collette F. into the water at Cranes. Rumor has it that Kris and Terry are like kids in an elevator… they love to push each other’s buttons. Laura M. keeps so quiet and never acts out of line. At least we have a few quotes.

There is a bit of news regarding the ACME Jr. staff. Kristina L. was injured this summer while off-duty at the beach. That’s one way to avoid those tedious Lip Sync practices. There was a Sarah L. Max M. sighting at the Cheesecake Factory (her favorite date place) before a movie. Sam Stan. Better start now to get his physical form for next summer. Now that the program is over we will miss former ACME Jr. staff member, Molly F., telling us the Boston temperature all summer, upon returning from class and jumping into Late Care.

The lifeguards have been behaving themselves, unfortunately. Jeff F. was a bit confused this week when offered free ice cream. He went to Capt. Dusty’s instead of coming up to the office. Peter T. was not called to “dead animal duty” this week. Before Emily W. left for school, she was seen practicing her lifeguarding skills with Sean C. in a pool. Rumor has it that Vlad has been randomly texting Emily since she went back.

If anyone gets locked out of his or her car and left the windows open a bit, Skev is skilled in using a wiffleball bat to unlock your door. He is one to help you solve your problems. He did a great job organizing the Acapulcos night with about 25 people in attendance.

Rec Rag 3rd Summer Edition

It's been too long since our last post... but we're so busy! Lip Sync was awesome last night, congrats to everyone who participated and supported us in the audience. Here is the latest Rec Rag...

Well, you have all made it through the half-way point of the summer. With a little bit of relief from the heat this weekend, you should all be energized for the ever-so-hectic Homecoming Week. We are looking forward to some incredible performances on Tuesday night. Now, let’s see what's happening with our staff...

Female staff should take notes on Mary W. O. this summer, a very smart newlywed, who knows some tricks to a great marriage. One example is to go on a girls’ shopping weekend up in N.H. while your husband stays home painting the kitchen in 100° heat. We heard she couldn’t pass up the Coach outlet. Lucky for her, she has had a tiny personal assistant helping her direct Tykes… Bev Rec’s own Stella. Joclyn B. and Bryan R. have been trying to get the kids to groove to the music, walking around Lynch with the boombox cranked.

Sam Sta. and Steve L. must be making their own lunches lately, as they haven’t been staking out the office for extra lunches as often. Cassie P. and Aaron S. have been seriously working on the “flag” part of their lip sync. Tim M., who looked like a cast member of Lion King at the Luau, and Sam Sto. were perfecting the art of making paper leis. Skev was wearing bear, or should we say bare, attire for the event. Speaking of scary, Captain Blackbeard made his annual appearance. It’s almost enough to pee your shorts. Rumor has it Marco E. and Regan G. had a fun date reenacting the movie “Ghost” at a local pottery studio. Ask Josh where to see a great pic.

The Adventure Camp staff is trying to create a masterpiece in two days. Someone mentioned that she had a “lip sync fuse as short as the hair in Terry’s ears.” Why was Laura looking into Terry’s ears? Good thing there haven’t been any bears at any of their campsites. Can you imagine Kris and Terry fighting a bear for the camp’s food? Kris has been helping Laura learn the new menu items at the Tavern. Laura would like some good tips, so ask her when she is working and ask for one of her tables. Kris and Laura have also been discussing their love for the Smart Phones. Terry is looking a bit darker lately. Guess he is proof that “A Touch of Gray Works.”

The family secret's out. Will Mc. doesn’t have the pressure of trying to be accepted to B.C. Tim explained he represents the 4th generation of McAuliffes to attend the fine institution.

Peter Trainor is the brave go-to Guard when anyone finds a dead animal on the beach. It's going to be busy this week, so all guards best be alert with at least one in the water at all times. Your bathing suits are wet, right? We kept hearing David B. had something for the Rec Rag but never gave us the info. Guess it can’t be that juicy.

It is pretty funny that out of 6 employees volunteering to give blood for the Red Cross, only Margaret H. and Skev were approved. The rejects included the following: Joscelyn R. K., Lauren C., Robbie D., and Meghan Ch. Bruce just drove them for the snacks and asked for a snack when he stepped into the room. See the B.R.D. Facebook for pictures. At least they got a coupon for free Friendly’s ice cream.

Rec Rag 2nd Summer Edition

Second session is in full swing. Some instructors ended the first session with a bang. Bryan R. and Mike C. took basketball to another level and took each other out during a recreational basketball game. Mike C. apparently has a sharp head, as Bryan R. received stitches on his face and a concussion. Mike C. suffered a minor concussion, appearing a bit more light-headed than usual. Luckily Steve L. has his first aid kit in his car and Tim M. got to work, after putting on his gloves, of course. His father taught him well. Skev, alias Rambo, has a huge bump on his head and a black eye, due to a collision at his park. Sam S. is the last one on his staff to prove he his fit as a fiddle. Lucky you have direct deposit!!!! Actually he showed his athletic prowess by climbing Mt. Washington on the 4th of July. Max M., alias “Sailor Boy”, showed his floating abilities in Sarah L.’s pool.

Corinne W. and Peter T. are an official item, watching sunsets at the beach. Kris M. and Sarah L. were couple-skating at the Roller Palace. How did Skev miss them when he was taking pictures? Jocelyn C. seems to have stolen the “Incredibles” idea from her beau’s playground. Matt M. is so nice… bet he didn’t even mind. Rumor has it that Matt Mc. doesn’t have it this summer. No mentors have that lovin’ feeling this year. Margaret H. is sore from boot camp. Mary W.O. seems to be keeping up with the quick pace, however. We are not sure how her husband is fairing. Nate S. was told that one of his playground kids’ older sister had a big crush on him. Sarah L. who is evidently not too fond of “Wedding Crashers”, is giving little details of the Cheesecake Factory. Stella K. (Cinderella) and Joscelyn R.K. (Princess Leia) made a cute pair arriving at the special event in their costumes. Terry’s son, Daniel, was an adorable firefighter.

This summer Skev and Vlad are fighting over being the “Rec Dept. Photographer of the Summer”. We may have discovered the one thing that gets Vlad moving. He took a great picture of the Lynch Park hawk on top of the shell. We’re not sure if it was before he tore off all the seagull’s feathers in front of the shocked spectators.

Alex B. has a talent or curse for having to always clean up poop in the bathrooms. Tim B. scooped up a dead seagull without any problems. Tough lifeguards this year!

Terry C. and Kris M. made it to the top of Mt. Monadnock, even after making every attempt to avoid the climbing part. They even used the excuse of having to switch vans due to excessive shaking… that was just Kris and Terry bopping up and down to their music playing. Luckily, they made it in time to climb up and down and eat hotdogs by the fire by 9:30pm. Funny we didn’t hear one complaint from Heather or Laura. Lucky for Laura, the staff can wake her up in the morning, since she has trouble charging her phone.

We are very pleased to hear that Katie Tufts, former Director of Tiny Tykes, is recuperating nicely after surgery this week. Thank you to those who made contributions toward her flowers which her close friend, Mary W.O., sent from our department. Next week there will be a list to sign up for food items to put together a meal for Katie. Let’s make it a meal to remember!!!

It is almost time to be practicing for the Lip Sync Extravaganza. Who will be more exhausted… the staff or the children? Remember, it is for the children. We heard people have been brainstorming at the Onion & the Tavern to come up with ideas for the performances. Skev probably has some great ideas for songs and dances. Heat Waaaave

Summer is in full swing! One week of parks and camps down, seven more glorious weeks to go! Bruce picked up sprinklers and now that we have our Rice’s Beach schedule planned out, we’ll be keeping cool in the water and gettin’ our tan on.

SPOTTED – Speaking of Rice’s, we spotted Rec alumni, Matt Lauranzano and Kelly Novack there! Also spotted, the Lyons' family.

Stella has been having an excellent time at Tykes, but she's a wanderer who eats other kids’ lunches! She’s got a lot to learn about waiting in line and following directions, but she comes home with all of her stuff and so tired (thanks Tykes staff!). She learned a new word at camp telling me, “Mommy, you’re a doozy!” Cute!

The first special event was Jacob Brower Day and we served hundreds of dogs, chips and candy bars to celebrate America’s birthday. CITs did a great job organizing and handing out food. I missed out on a dog, but no worries, I got Fritos and Reese’s!

The Skev Report – No rest for Skev Robichaud! After subbing at ACME, he’s on to Livingstone to fill in for Jackie. ACME enjoyed his company so much, they made cards to commemorate his time spent there. Most kids remarked about his geographic tongue and marvelous beef and cheese body odor. How observant. Skev was filmed boogying on the shell to the sweet sounds of DJ Jazzy Josh. Check Facebook for a short, but sweet, video clip.

AC survived their first overnight with no throw up in the vans.

Rec Rag 2010 - 1st Summer Edition

It's been crazy around here... CRAZY! Here is the first legit Rec Rag of the summer. Enjoy!

Bring on summer 2010! We hope to make it the best one yet, working as a positive, unified team. Welcome back to all veteran employees and good luck to all newbies. Remember, the Rec Rag is our gossip and informational biweekly publication. Drop off any newsworthy info up in the office.

Josh M. has been doing a great job as the Head Ranger/Medical Coordinator. He is Bruce’s right hand man, who witnessed Bruce hitting every tasting table at Costco the other day. Josh also makes a mean D.J. and got everyone dancing at J.B. Day. Speaking of getting low, Mike A., alias Skev-Z, has been scouted by Alicia Keys’ manager as a Jay-Z stand-in during her Northeast tours. Skev has been practicing his singing as he belts out songs while driving out of Lynch. Connor M. has been doing a great job filling in as ranger in a moment’s notice. Greg P., is sporting a new Friday Night Lights “do” this summer. He might need a headband soon… bet you could borrow one of Tim M.’s. Matt M. has also become a dependable ranger when asked to do different tasks.

We want to congratulate Mary W.O. on her recent marriage. Heard she rules the roost and made him sign up early morning boot camp. Nick C. has been missed by many little Tykers, but Brendan C. is trying to fill his flip flops. Meaghan N. wins the award for lasting the least hours on the first day. Those little kids are tiring! One of boys must definitely be a go-cart enthusiast when he goes to amusement parks. Monica C. looks like she is doing suicide sprints keeping up with future track stars, including one familiar blonde curly top who is fond of Bruce’s snacks.

Word is out that an Acme counselor may give Jeff Kaylor a run for his money with his own magical talents. Justin G., you should try out some acts at Trivia Night. Sam S. & Steve L., still attached at the hip, are excited to be near the office food. Who feeds them during the school year? Bev. Rec. couples this summer: Tim & Sam, Josh & Molly, Matt & Jocelyn C., and Marco & Regan. Sarah L. is wearing appropriate ranger footwear. Did you hear she is doing boot camp, as well? She and Mary will kick the guys’ butts in core training this summer, that’s for sure! Skev has been working out since early spring; eating right (all the chicken & grilled veggies you can eat) and hopefully buying a new belt. Bet he can tell you about rollback deals at Walmart.

The 3 McAuliffe bros worked hard on their 4th of July outfits this week. Glad to see they haven’t lost their touch. The rest of the staff should start planning for the “Big” outfits and look for those career-themed clothes at Savers before next Thursday.

Adventure Camp survived their first overnight. Heather gave her annual “Deodorant Talk” on the first day and bought a stick for the first aid kit. We are wondering if Kris M. had a bag of popcorn in his tent, since a little birdie told us he keeps one under his desk in school. Kris, congratulations on your new position at Centerville School. Terry made his son so sad by going on the overnight. We actually caught a tad of a sensitive side to Terry, while describing the space picture his son drew for him when he returned. Who knew?

The lifeguards had a “Baywatch” orientation, swimming from Dane St. to Lynch beach. Bet Jay N. knew that was required and was faking the “looking for a real job” bit. The good news is that all the guards made the swim. It’s probably the most swimming they will do all summer.

Everyone is invited to enter the cookie bake-off on Monday and taste samples up in the office. Bruce, you better have an entry this time!

Summer Fever

Busy, busy! It sounds like a World Cup soccer game in here, bzzzz, bzzzz, bbbbzzzz. Lots to do and one more week to do it.

Josh and I had a meeting at Garden City Pediatrics. In the parking lot I saw this on someone's car... beauty!

CPR & First Aid took place in the Carriage House today and everyone who signed up, showed up for the class. Bravo! I feel safer already.

Bake Off #2-Muffins was today and unfortunately, only Jean and Gail participated. Shame on the rest of us! Gail was the big winner with her scrumptuous pumpkin-raisin muffins with cream cheese frosting. Jean was a close second with delish corn-cran-blueberry muffins. Great breakfast, ladies! Thank you!

No Skev today, friends. Let's hope he's back tomorrow.

This morning started out right, with Jean’s coffee cake and a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday for Skev and Heather who turned twentysomething this week. Hooray! Skev is partying at New Divine’s and Fire & Ice in Boston tonight and Heather is probably unwillingly hanging with Joscelyn’s creepy thirtysomething friends at Kitty O’Shea’s. Have fun you two crazy kids!

The Skev Report - Weekly cookout is today and Skevia Child is grilling burgers and dogs. He was late this morning because it took him a long time to decide between all beef or mixed meat hot dogs. The newly crowned, “King of Early Care” is trying a new schedule system this summer. He’s looking for a sub on day one of camp! Skev is wearing a purple flower in his secondhand aviators today, in memory of the vets.

Josh and Kris Melanson have such similar handwriting, it's scary.

Bruce went to see Jimmy Buffett last night! He was on his best behavior, but he and Janet somehow managed to get there with plenty of beverages, but only one small bag of Doritos to share! They enjoyed clips of the Celtics game in between sets.

Boo, Kobe Bryant. Booooooooooooo!
